Unknown Input Observers(UIO) are used in model based FDI schemes to reduce or almost eliminate the effect of unknown disturbances on the plant/system.Further they can be used to generate residuls that are insensitive to unknown disturbances or noise, thus lower the false alarm rate.For isolation of different faults a bank of UIOs are designed.
